Day 2

« Back

BY KATIE:

After a solid night’s sleep we hit the road half an hour later than hoped, at 8am. We left mum behind to clean up the last bits and pieces in our cabin, and then she headed to the Orewa shops to pick up some of our forgotten items (eg. toothbrush and Strepsils).

We got to Waiwera in really good time, helped by the fact we ran down the hill to get there! Along the next part of road we encountered one stupid driver who appeared to speed up and angle his van towards us. We gave him the stare down as we watched him go past and tailgate the car in front down the hill.

Thanks to the new toll road we weren’t faced with much traffic during the first part of the morning, but once we connected with State Highway 1 the traffic flowing past us increased immensely! A lot more massive trucks, two of which actually ripped my hat right off my head as they rushed by!

It was also at the point where we started on State Highway 1 that the ‘dead Pukeko’ count began. I don’t know if they are a pest or an endangered species, but there are now 4 less of them roaming the roads of New Zealand!

Later in the day mum gave me a call to let us know that Helen and Gordon Forsyth from our church were on their way up to see us. It was awesome to see some friendly familiar faces… especially when we weren’t expecting them! They roared past, horn tooting and lights flashing and then pulled into the first possible side bay. We caught up to them and hung out until mum came and met us. Mum and the Forsyth’s then left us where they found us as they drove off to have lunch!

Not to worry though, Jo and I just munched down on what will become world famous Oat, Cranberry, White Chocolate and Macadamia cookies by Lesley Scott!

Warkworth finally was “just over this hill”, which it hadn’t been for at least 4 times before that! I gave mum a call to come and get us from our stop off, and before she was able to pick us up we managed to get a head start on tomorrows walk… by about 400m! Ha!

Later on Jo and I will be heading to the Golf/Cricket/Baseball Range that is just before Warkworth. It will be a chance for me to get some cricket practice in, or at least some slogging practice! :/ Hmmm…objective for today’s training: wait for the ball… and swing hard!

For dinner tonight we have been invited to go to Maureen and David Mullholland’s (mum’s cousin). They are up at Snell’s Beach, so it should be a really nice place to chill out for the evening! Our accommodation for tonight is Bridge House Lodge which is quite fancy indeed!

Mum says: “for all of you who thought I would get bored…I haven’t had a chance to yet!”
